As a cultural tourism object, Tenganan Village has a lot of interesting things to see and learn about. From the social system, the inhabitants of this village are local people who preserve the tradition of marrying the local people as well.

This is of course different from the family system adopted by common Balinese. If local people marry people from other villages or islands, they have to live outside the village. That is the awig-awig or the customary law here.

Regardless of its origins, Tenganan has fiercely guarded its unique traditions. The villagers, known as the Bali Aga Tenganan, have meticulously preserved their language, religion, and social structure for generations.

This unwavering commitment to their heritage sets Tenganan apart, making it a living museum of Balinese history.

  1. Great Festivals and Ceremonies of Tenganan Village

Another attraction of Tenganan Village is the Mekaré-karé. It is a ritual tradition or is better known as the “pandan war”. Mekaré-karé or the pandan leaf war is the culmination of the Ngusaba Sambah ceremony series which is held every June.

The ceremony lasts for 30 days. During that month, Mekaré-karé takes place 2 to 4 times. Each time it is held, offerings are made to their ancestors.

Mekaré-karé or “pandan war” is participated in by men, from children to adults. This is, of course, a must-see festival when you are accidentally in this village in June.

This annual ritual has essentially the same meaning as the tabuh rah ceremony which is commonly performed by Hindus in Bali when holding religious ceremonies.

The Mekaré-karé ceremony is always enlivened by the typical Tenganan Village traditional music, namely gamelan selonding.

Another captivating festival is the “Mesanti” harvest festival, held after the rice harvest. This joyous occasion expresses gratitude for a bountiful harvest and features vibrant offerings and communal meals.

Participating in these festivals allows visitors to experience the heart and soul of Tenganan’s vibrant culture firsthand.

Tenganan’s true claim to fame lies in its exquisite textiles known as “gringsing.” This intricate double ikat weaving technique involves meticulously dyeing the warp and weft threads before weaving, resulting in stunning geometric patterns.

The vibrant colors and complex designs of gringsing fabrics are unlike anything found elsewhere in Bali.

The weaving process itself is a mesmerizing display of skill and patience. Women in the village dedicate themselves to mastering this art form, passed down through generations.

Witnessing them meticulously work their looms and create these masterpieces is a testament to the enduring spirit of Tenganan’s artistic heritage.

A walk through Tenganan’s traditional houses is like stepping back in time. Unlike the open courtyards typical of Balinese architecture, Tenganan houses feature a unique walled compound with separate structures for living, cooking, and storage.

These dwellings, constructed from red bricks and palm leaves, showcase the village’s sustainable building practices and harmony with nature.

The village also boasts several important temples, each with distinct architectural styles and purposes. Exploring these sacred spaces allows visitors to appreciate the intricate details and symbolism embedded within Tenganan’s religious beliefs.
